TapAlert TapAlert

When Something’s Not Right, One Tap Is Enough.

TapAlert gives seniors a simple way to reach family, friends, or caregivers using reliable SMS — without struggling with complex phone interfaces. Fast to send. Easy to use. Peace of mind for everyone.

Our Philosophy & Design Principles

🛡️

Privacy-First

  • No accounts required — the app works entirely locally, no sign-up or login
  • No tracking or analytics — no user behavior data is collected or transmitted
  • No ads — the app is ad-free, monetized only through a one-time in-app purchase for premium features
  • No subscriptions — users pay once (or not at all for the free tier), no recurring fees
  • Location is only accessed when sending an alert — never in the background
📡

SMS-First Architecture

The app prioritizes SMS over data-based messaging (push notifications, WhatsApp, etc.) because:

  • SMS works when internet/Wi-Fi is down (cell towers have battery backup)
  • Recipients don't need smartphones — feature phones and basic phones receive SMS
  • No app installation required on the recipient's end
  • SMS is carrier-level delivery, not dependent on third-party servers being online

Smart Redundancy: When no cellular service is available, the app falls back to sending SMS first via Wi-Fi Calling (if available, phone/provider dependent) or, if not, via Twilio (if configured). This provides a secondary delivery path when the primary SMS channel is unavailable. Likewise, in a situation with only cellular service (no Wi-Fi and no internet), if the Direct SMS fails for some reason (defective or no SIM,...), Twilio (if configured) will act as failback, as it can also use the cellular network (via 4G/5G) to send the message as a last resort.

👨‍🦳🧑‍🦳

Senior-Friendly Design

  • Large, high-contrast buttons (Single SOS and I'm OK)
  • Minimal navigation and cognitive load
  • Voice-to-text so users don’t need to type
  • Configurable Countdown timer or Hold-to-send confirmation prevents accidental alerts
  • Guided onboarding with step-by-step setup
  • All UI decisions prioritize clarity and simplicity over feature density
  • Zero friction configuration with magic link that can be sent via WhatsApp, SMS, Email, etc. With a single click your senior can configure the app and start using it.
  • Screen flash — 3 bright flashes confirm every alert, so users with hearing loss never miss it
  • Lower-frequency tones — default alert sounds at 500–600 Hz, easier to hear for age-related hearing loss
  • Haptic countdown — phone pulses once per second during the countdown, no need to look at the screen
  • Screen reader support — fully compatible with TalkBack (Android) and VoiceOver (iOS); buttons are labelled and outcomes are announced aloud

Powerful Features for Your Peace of Mind

Everything you need to stay connected with your emergency contacts, designed for simplicity and reliability.

🆘

SOS & OK Buttons

Send predefined SOS “I need help!” or “I’m okay” messages instantly with one tap. Messages include your precise GPS location and address.

📶

Smart Message Delivery

Works offline with Direct SMS. Automatic fallback between cellular and Wi-Fi to ensure your message gets through.

⏱️

Check-In Timer

Set a countdown timer. If you don’t check in on time, an automatic alert is sent to your contacts. Perfect for solo activities.

🎙️

Voice-to-Text Alerts

Create messages hands-free using voice input. Helpful in stressful or limited-mobility situations when typing isn’t possible.

👨‍🦳🧑‍🦳

Seniors-Friendly Design

Large text, high contrast, tunable sound pitch for hearing impaired, and a clear, distraction-free interface. Easy for seniors and non-technical users.

🔗

Family assisted setup

Family members can help seniors set up the app and contacts remotely using a configuration link. Configure the app on your own device and send them the link to install and configure the app with just one click.

🌍

Multiple Languages

Supports multiple languages for broader accessibility. Use TapAlert in your preferred language.

📍

Smart Location Context

Includes both precise GPS coordinates and human-readable street address. Works even if recipients are offline or using basic phones.

✉️

E-mail redundancy

Can send E-mail alerts as a reinforcement messaging method or to provide alerts redundancy if Twilio is not available.

Twilio

Twilio as SMS failback

Android: the app sends SMS directly from your phone, no Twilio needed but is recommended. Twilio is optional, used as Wi-Fi backup when cellular is unavailable or broken — but it can also be used as failback in cellular-only situations if your Direct SMS does not work or is not available.

iOS: Apple blocks apps from sending SMS directly. This is an Apple restriction, not a TapAlert limitation. Twilio is the bridge that lets the app send SMS automatically on your behalf. Without it, the only option is manually tapping "Send" again in the Messages app — not ideal in an emergency.

🆘📋

Panic Mode & Situation Alerts

Panic Mode delivers instant SOS and “I’m OK” alerts with a single tap. Swipe left to Situation Alerts — 3 customizable message buttons for any non-emergency situation, with optional voice recording per alert.

📱

Home Screen Widget

Android only: Add a one-tap emergency widget to your home screen for instant access without opening the app. Instructions for using it with a physical button or gesture are also provided in the app.

Intuitive interface designed for speed and simplicity

🤖 Android First

While we support iOS for cross-platform families, our flagship features leverage Android capabilities for sending automated native SMS alerts.

Summary: What Each Platform Can Do

Capability Android iOS
Send SMS for free Yes (Direct SMS, always) Yes (iOS Messages, requires user interaction)
Send SMS automatically Yes (Direct SMS, always) Only with Twilio (paid)
Works without internet Yes (Direct SMS uses cell network) Yes (iOS Messages uses cell network)
Fully automatic Dead Man Timer Yes Only with Twilio (paid). Without Twilio, the Messages app opens and the user must tap Send
No user interaction needed Yes Only with Twilio. iOS Messages always requires tapping Send
Email fallback Yes (when internet available) Yes (when internet available)

iOS Limitations

(compared to Android)

  • Cannot send SMS programmatically (Apple restriction)
  • Fully automatic SMS requires Twilio
  • Dead Man Timer cannot send SMS silently without Twilio
  • ⚠️ iOS Messages preference requires the user to physically tap Send

Android Advantages

  • Direct SMS is always free and automatic
  • No Twilio needed for basic functionality
  • Dead Man Timer is always fully automatic
  • Twilio adds redundancy (second method), not a requirement (as long as your phone/carrier allows Wifi calls)

When Both Platforms Behave the Same

  • ℹ️ WiFi only (no cell): Both use Wifi Call if available, Twilio or email — identical behavior
  • Email redundancy: Works the same on both platforms

💬 SMS have a price, but your peace of mind doesn't

TapAlert does not charge for the messages sent. The only costs you may incur are those applied by your own mobile carrier for standard SMS — just like any regular text message — and, if you choose to configure Twilio as failback or alternative service, the per-message fees set by Twilio (Note: there's a free Twilio trial account but we do not recommend using it). The app itself adds zero extra cost on top.

🔒 Privacy by Design

Important Safety Notice

TapAlert is NOT a replacement for emergency services like 911 or 112.

Message delivery depends on network availability and recipient action. This app does not provide monitoring, emergency response, or guaranteed delivery. In real emergencies, always contact emergency services directly.
